This hand-knotted wool vintage Afghani Turkmen rug features three columns of
octagonal Ersari “elephant’s foot” güls spread across an abrashed red field.
Secondary hooked diamonds line the field between the güls. A series of numerous
borders expertly frame the composition, giving the piece a great deal of depth
and visual interest. The kaikalak, or ram’s horn cross, main border echoes the
trefoil crosses that appear in the center of the güls in the field. The
secondary borders feature Laleh Abbasi, floret and S-motif designs. The limited
color palette of reds and black allow the bold graphic designs to shine, giving
the intricate patterns in this vintage Turkmen rug charm and appeal. Rendered
in variegated shades of scarlet red, ruby red, brick red, vermilion, coffee and
